Freya’s interest in music began with the recorder at the age of 6, followed by the piano and violin the year after. Upon leaving school, Freya pursued her academic interests and studied Classics at the University of Edinburgh. After graduating in 2019, she went on to complete a Master's degree in violin performance at RCS, where she studied with Associate Head of Strings, Hector Scott. Under his tutelage, Freya won the Hilda Bailey Prize for Violin in 2020 and second prize in the North International Music Competition 2021. As a soloist, she has performed in masterclasses with Simon Smith, Leland Chen and Nicola Benedetti.
Freya’s orchestral experience is extensive, having led EYO, USSO, NCOS and various RCS orchestras. This has given her the opportunity to work under renowned conductors such as Donald Runnicles, Sian Edwards and Garry Walker. She has played in side-by-side projects with the Scottish Ensemble, performed in the BBC Proms alongside members of the BBC SSO, was chosen for the RSNO Professional Experience Scheme and has since played with Scottish Ballet and the RSNO.
Freya enjoys chamber music and has always played both classical and traditional music in a variety of ensembles. She freelances with various ceilidh bands but primarily plays and sings in a function band, The Jets, which allows her to explore music across the genres and perform with effects pedals.
Freya supports the music scene in her hometown of Aberdeen and is currently Secretary of the Aberdeen and North East of Scotland Music Festival.
Recently, Freya completed an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Performance at RCS during which she showcased the violin music of Janet Beat and recorded selected works of the composers Grazyna Bacewicz, Lili Boulanger and Clara Schumann.
